A Decade of Travel

Travel Highlights – 2010 to 2020

TOP HOTEL: Although I’ve been fortunate to experience a number of top luxury hotel brands over the past decade including: Belmond, Montage, Ritz Carlton, Kempinski, Fairmont, St. Regis and Waldorf Astoria, the Four Seasons Lanai tops my list of favourites.

I’m a sucker for a beautiful resort and when you combine that with a quiet tropical island, stunning views of the ocean and top notch Four Seasons service – you had me at ‘hello’.

State of the art room technology, dining at Nobu and a nearby oceanside golf course round out just a few of the top reasons I absolutely loved this property.

TOP NORTH AMERICA DESTINATION: Austin, Texas.

The city’s motto “Keep Austin Weird” tells you much of what you need to know about this fun destination! Known for great food, incredible music and a laid back attitude, Austin does not disappoint.Whether you’re roaming the vintage shops, funky restaurants or cool music venues on South Congress, learning the Texas Two-Step, enjoying the beautiful public green spaces, taking a dive into Texas history or just watching the bats fly from under the Congress Avenue bridge, you’re sure to have a good time in Austin.

TOP EUROPEAN DESTINATION: Berlin, Germany.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Berlin but at every turn I was surprised.Surprised by the very hip vibe, a relaxed (un “German”) attitude and the moving history of this fascinating city.Chilling reminders of the city’s turbulent past remain at every corner, but they are overshadowed by Michelin star restaurants, trendy nightclubs, amazing shopping and a thriving arts and culture scene.

TOP INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION: Myanmar

Exotic Myanmar (formerly Burma) was just opening up to tourism when I visited in 2014.What the country lacks in tourist infrastructure, it makes up in fascinating history, stunning temples and friendly, welcoming people.Take a hot air balloon ride over Bagan – you won’t be disappointed.

TOP CRUISE: Crystal Cruises

I didn’t do a lot of cruising this past decade so it was a toss up between AMA Waterways and Avalon Waterways European river cruising or the 14 days I spent on the Crystal Symphony exploring Asia.Crystal won out as it provided that perfect balance of a boutique ship experience (fewer people, personalized service, first class dining) while still offering multiple entertainment options on board (lounges, movie theatre, casino, nightly shows).Cruising is such a relaxing way to travel. Unpack once and be transported to different countries to explore. Heaven!
