Kelly Bromley, one of our Leisure specialists, took a group to Africa last June to explore the Zambezi River. Read about her experience below.
"I created this itinerary and worked closely with Giltedge Africa, which is an award-winning, luxury inbound tour operator with an in-depth knowledge of Southern and Eastern Africa and the magnificent Indian Ocean islands.
We began on the Zambezi river, it borders between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It flows placidly past the David Livingstone Safari Lodge (which is located right on the river) until it reaches the Basalt Cliff and then changes to a ferocious torrent as it tumbles over and transforms into Victoria Falls. It is known to locals as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning the smoke that thunders. The mist and spray from the falls can be seen for miles. A must do, while visiting, are the hikes along the water and a helicopter ride over the water falls.
Our next stop was sailing on the Zambezi Queen which is part of our Virtuoso products. This was a highlight amongst highlights. It sails on the Chobe River which divides Namibia and Botswana and offers land or boa safaris and fishing excursions as well. There were many animals to be seen here. It is all inclusive and the food was amazing. The drinks are flowing all day and the staff are wonderful locals.
The vessel includes 14 cabins and the experience is like nothing you have
ever experienced before.
During our tour we were fortunate (or unfortunate to some) enough to come across a lion feasting on his catch of the day.
It's a bit harsh to see something like this is person but we have to remember this is nature's full circle.
We saw beautiful elephants cooling off in the water.
The excursion then took us to a local village where they sold their wares and showed us their homes.
I was on of the lucky ones to get chosen to dance with one of the local villagers.
We finished up the tour having dinner on the Namibia side of the Chobe River and were further surprised with a glorious sunset. The whole experience was amazing!"
