Secret Season in Southern Africa
If you’ve been on a safari before, you may have heard the term – Secret Season. It’s the period in Southern Africa between December and March that offers a rare and unique opportunity for safari goers. Known also as the Green Season, this period is when the African Sky opens with short, swift bursts of thunderstorms in the afternoon, followed by blue skies, mild days, and incredible sunsets. The rains are vital to sustaining the delicate balance of the country’s ecosystem and without them Southern Africa would not be the wildlife mecca that it is.
During the secret season, the rains blanket the dry and parched lands of this region, transforming them into a lush green carpeted oasis. With the rain comes opportunity – there are fewer tourists during this time, prices are lower, it’s a great time to see Migratory Birds and it’s one of the best times to see baby animals. The contrast of colors make it one of the best times for wildlife photography.
If you are thinking about travel during this time, here is a sampling of the many options available.
